A Masterpiece of International Craftsmanship

This Hispano-Suiza H6C, featuring coachwork by Hibbard & Darrin, embodies the perfect fusion of Swiss engineering, French artistic flair, and American ingenuity. Built by the renowned Parisian coachworks established in 1924 by Howard "Dutch" Darrin and Thomas Hibbard, this car showcases one of their most iconic designs—the Transformable Torpedo.

This body style, famous for its snug-fitting convertible top that folded seamlessly between the trapezoidal side windows, was seen on several prestigious chassis, including the Rolls-Royce of actress Marlene Dietrich—as well as this extraordinary Hispano-Suiza H6C.

Early History & Prominent Ownership

According to Hispano-Suiza factory records, this H6C was delivered new on 26 January 1928 to Clarke D. Pease, the U.S. distributor. This makes it one of the very few H6Cs originally sent to the United States, adding to its rarity and desirability.

Its first owner was one of the Chopitea brothers, flamboyant Peruvian playboys who inherited a vast sugar fortune. Known for their extravagant lifestyle, they maintained homes across the world, including one dedicated solely to housing their suits. Their car collection included an array of Duesenbergs and 12-cylinder Packards, with this Hispano-Suiza standing as one of their prized acquisitions.

Subsequent owners included:

  • Mr. Marais
  • Mirant Eknayan, a prominent Armenian diamond trader and art collector

Elegant 1930s Styling Updates

At some point in its early life, the car was updated to reflect the streamlined aesthetic of the late 1930s, incorporating:

  • Sweeping, full pontoon fenders
  • A rear body extension with an integrated trunk, enhancing both style and practicality

These refinements gave the car a more contemporary and sophisticated profile, keeping it in line with the era’s evolving automotive design.

Restoration & Recent Maintenance

Later, the Hispano-Suiza was acquired by esteemed collector Arturo Keller of California, further solidifying its prestige.

In 2013, the current owner undertook a comprehensive restoration to ensure the car remained in top condition, including:

  • Engine tuning
  • Brakes, steering, and suspension adjustments
  • Freshening of belt molding and fender doors

Recently, RM Auto Restoration performed additional servicing, which included:

  • Installing a new clutch
  • Repairing a flooding carburetor
  • Minor electrical sorting

Today, the car presents beautifully, with:

  • Brightwork in excellent condition
  • A rich, dark brown canvas convertible top
  • Cream-colored leather upholstery, elegantly accented with chocolate brown carpets and cream piping
  • Stunning interior wood trim, providing a striking contrast to the aluminum instrument panel
  • A polished aluminum firewall, reflecting the grandeur of the H6C’s powerful engine

A Rare Opportunity to Own a Spectacular H6C

One of only a few surviving H6Cs, and among the very few originally delivered to the United States, this Hispano-Suiza H6C is an exceptional representation of pre-war luxury and Art Deco design.

With its storied ownership, stunning coachwork, and meticulous preservation, this magnificent automobile is a true collector’s prize, embodying the best of Swiss precision, French elegance, and American innovation.
