1925 Hispano Suiza by Duvivier
Hispano-Suiza: A Symbol of Prestige and Excellence
Among the hundreds of automobile brands worldwide, only a select few have attained true prestige and exclusivity—and Hispano-Suiza stands proudly among them. Often compared to Rolls-Royce, Hispano-Suiza produced some of the most sophisticated and innovative luxury cars of the early 20th century.
The marque’s legacy is preserved by skilled enthusiasts, notably Mr. Vladislav Novák from Uherské Hradiště, who has restored several Hispano-Suiza models from near-wrecks, including a remarkable twelve-cylinder example. His masterful craftsmanship is respected internationally, even earning admiration from French collectors. Novák also contributed to the restoration of a Škoda–Hispano-Suiza H6B, further cementing his reputation in the automotive world.
The 1925 Hispano-Suiza H6B: Engineering Excellence
Produced between 1924 and 1927, the H6B was built exclusively in France, featuring cutting-edge technology derived from World War I aircraft engines.
Specifications & Performance
- Engine: 6.5L inline-six, inspired by aircraft technology
- Power Output: 130 hp, delivering a top speed of 140 km/h
- Ignition System: Dual ignition with six spark plugs per side
- Transmission: 3-speed manual, often starting directly in second gear
The six-cylinder engine was a technical marvel, incorporating:
- An overhead camshaft
- A massive seven-bearing crankshaft, weighing 45 kg—forged from 350 kg of steel
- Assisted drum brakes on all four wheels, ensuring superior stopping power
These advancements gave the H6B remarkable performance, easily surpassing 100 km/h, making it one of the fastest and most refined luxury cars of its time.
Innovative Dashboard & Driver Controls
The H6B’s dashboard was as advanced as its mechanical components, featuring:
- A barometric pressure-based fuel gauge
- A speedometer with a trip meter
- A thermometer and voltmeter
Additionally, the steering wheel was equipped with three levers:
- Timing adjustment
- Choke control
- Hand throttle
This layout provided drivers with precise control over the engine’s performance, reinforcing Hispano-Suiza’s reputation for sophisticated engineering.
Coachwork by Duvivier: A Unique Boat Tail Design
The Hispano-Suiza H6 series was custom-bodied by elite coachbuilders, ensuring each car was one of a kind. This 1925 H6B features a stunning boat tail design by Duvivier, exemplifying the era’s finest craftsmanship and bespoke luxury.
In Czechoslovakia, several notable coachbuilders also contributed to Hispano-Suiza’s legacy, including:
- J. O. Jech
- Petera
- Uhlík
- Brožík
Each of these artisans helped create unique, elegant designs that showcased both style and performance.
Hispano-Suiza’s Global Influence & Legacy
Despite its name, Hispano-Suiza was never manufactured in Switzerland. Instead, the company was co-founded in Barcelona in 1899 by Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt. By 1904, Hispano-Suiza had gained a strong reputation, debuting its 14 HP model, which caught the attention of royal clients, including King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
To meet increasing demand, the company expanded production to France, avoiding costly import tariffs and establishing the Levallois factory, where the prestigious H6 model was built.
The Evolution of Hispano-Suiza
- 1920s: The H6 series set new benchmarks for luxury and engineering excellence.
- 1930s: The J12 series introduced powerful V12 engines, further advancing the marque’s capabilities.
- 1934: French production ceased.
- 1940s: The Spanish division continued operations but eventually merged with Pegaso, ending the Hispano-Suiza automobile era.
