A Landmark Model in Rolls-Royce History
The Rolls-Royce Phantom III, introduced in 1936, was the company’s most advanced pre-war luxury car. It succeeded the six-cylinder Phantom II, introducing an all-new 7,340cc V12 engine—a first for Rolls-Royce—which initially produced 165bhp, later increased to 180bhp.
Notably, the Phantom III was also the first Rolls-Royce to feature independent front suspension, greatly improving its handling and ride quality. With a top speed of up to 100mph, it was among the fastest and most sophisticated luxury cars of its era.
Production was halted by World War II in 1939, with only 710 examples built, of which approximately 300 survive today, making this a highly collectible and rare model.
Distinguished Provenance – Formerly Owned by Lord Beaverbrook
This particular Phantom III, chassis 3DL38, was delivered new on May 10, 1938, through Jack Barclay Ltd, one of the most prestigious Rolls-Royce dealers in London. It was originally fitted with sports limousine coachwork by Park Ward, featuring the then-trendy ‘semi-razor edge’ styling, giving it a sharp, elegant profile.
Throughout its lifetime, this car has had a series of notable owners, including:
- William Murray (first recorded owner)
- G. Dawson, Esq of Cheltenham (from August 26, 1946)
- Lord Beaverbrook (acquired in 1949) – A powerful British media mogul and influential political figure
- Joseph Sunlight (from October 1950) – A well-known Manchester-based architect
- Stafford Training Services (recorded owner from March 31, 1982)
- Albert John Wilkins of Basted, Kent (previous owner before 1982)
This impressive provenance adds to the historical significance of the car, especially given Lord Beaverbrook’s prominent status in British politics and media.
Acquisition and Current Condition
The current owner acquired this Phantom III at Bonhams’ Harrogate sale in November 2008 (Lot 650). At the time, it was described as a well-preserved example with its original V5 documentation still on file.
While specific details regarding recent restorations or mechanical work are not listed, the Phantom III’s robust engineering and high build quality ensure it remains a desirable classic, sought after by collectors.
An Exclusive Pre-War Rolls-Royce for Discerning Collectors
With its rare V12 engine, historic significance, and exceptional ownership lineage, this 1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom III represents an important chapter in the brand’s pre-war legacy. As one of only 300 surviving examples, it remains a remarkable collector’s piece, ideal for concours events, historic rallies, or private collections.
