Gabriel Voisin: From Aviation to Automobiles
Gabriel Voisin was one of France’s greatest aviation pioneers, achieving global recognition for his groundbreaking innovations. In 1907, he built the first practical aeroplane capable of taking off under its own power, and his Avions Voisin company became the world’s first mass producer of aircraft.
However, with the end of World War I in 1918, Voisin had to shift focus. Seeking a new industry to sustain his workforce, he explored motorized bicycles and light cyclecars before turning to automobile manufacturing.
Voisin’s goal was clear—to build a luxury automobile unrivaled in prestige, comfort, and speed. This vision materialized in 1919 with the launch of the Voisin M1, featuring a Knight sleeve-valve engine. By 1922, Voisin introduced the C3, an evolution of the original design, boasting a more powerful engine and an extended chassis with semi-elliptic rear springs for improved ride quality.
