Description:
Launched in June 1952, the Bentley R-Type was Bentley's second post-war model, succeeding the Mark VI. It featured notable updates, including an enlarged boot, revised rear wings and suspension, as well as the adoption of Rolls-Royce's renowned 'F-head' (inlet-over-exhaust) 4,566cc six-cylinder engine introduced in 1951. This engine provided improved performance and reliability.
The R-Type retained a separate chassis and was available with standard steel saloon bodywork by Pressed Steel, while bespoke coachwork could also be ordered. Other technical refinements included independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes, and (on this example) the highly desirable automatic transmission.
In period, the Bentley R-Type was recognized for its performance and refinement. Tested by The Motor in 1953, an automatic R-Type reached a top speed of 101.7 mph, accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 13 seconds, and achieved a fuel consumption of 15.5 mpg, very respectable figures for such a substantial and luxurious car.
History of this Example:
- Delivered in October 1953, this R-Type was supplied with optional automatic transmission and initially sent to The Car Mart Limited, Euston Road, London, for trials.
- The car’s early ownership history is unclear, but records indicate a purchase in 1987 remaining in the same hands until 2012.
- Significant works during this period include:
- Brake servo rebuilt (1995)
- Radiator re-cored (2000)
- Engine overhaul, including cylinder head skimming, valve seat renewal, and internal checks (post-2005)
- Further engine work totaling £1,500 by T&G Auto Spares Ltd, Leeds (2006)
- In 2012, the car was exchanged for an MG TD.
- In 2014, it was purchased by the father of the current owner. At that time, due to corrosion on the lower front wings and an overpaint in black over red, it was decided to completely repaint the car in its original color, Tudor Grey. Unfortunately, the new owner passed away before taking delivery, and the family opted to sell the car.
- In early 2016, ‘NYY 502’ was entrusted to DEW Car Services, a respected Bentley and Rolls-Royce specialist in Eynsham, Oxfordshire (with nearly 30 years of experience on these marques). Work totaling £2,200 included:
- Full rebuild of the front brakes (new shoes, wheel cylinders, brake servo)
- Engine tuning and full service, including tappet adjustment, new ignition points, and spark plugs
- Gearbox service, with bands adjusted and oil changed
Condition and Presentation:
Today, the Bentley presents beautifully in Tudor Grey with its originally patinated interior, featuring beige leather seats with an inviting natural wear. The wooden dashboard, restored around ten years ago, reflects a tasteful balance of sportiness and luxury, characteristic of Bentley interiors.
Although the exterior paint was refreshed some time ago and might benefit from future attention, the car remains in very good presentable condition. The original toolkit is still present in its special compartment within the boot.
Documentation & Registration:
- Offered with factory build sheets
- UK V5C registration document
- Valid MoT certificate
Summary:
A well-maintained, nicely restored, and very well-documented example of Bentley’s R-Type Saloon, combining classic Bentley engineering with the ease of automatic transmission. This example benefits from long-term ownership, a thorough maintenance record, and retains its elegant period charm.
