The Bentley Continental S2: The Epitome of Post-War Luxury and Performance
When the Bentley Continental R was launched in 1952, it was the most expensive and fastest four-seater car in the world, capable of reaching 190 km/h. Derived from the elegant lines of the famous Bentley Embiricos, designed by Georges Paulin, it became a landmark in Bentley history, combining sportiness with refinement.
In 1959, Bentley introduced the Continental S2, a major evolution of the earlier model. It featured a new 6.2-litre V8 engine, replacing the older straight-six, paired with automatic transmission. This upgrade significantly improved performance, with 200bhp on tap and a top speed of 200 km/h, while retaining the luxury and comfort for which Bentley was renowned. Only 147 left-hand drive S2 Continentals were produced, making it an exclusive and highly desirable model.
A Unique Example – First Delivered to France
The Bentley Continental S2 chassis BC4LAR is an exceptional and early example — the fourth S2 built, and believed to be the first delivered to France. A plaque on the engine confirms that it was delivered new by Franco Britannic Automobiles in Levallois, Bentley's official French importer.
The car has remained in the same ownership since 1975, demonstrating remarkable continuity and care. The owner, a passionate enthusiast, regularly drove it to London for service at Jack Barclay, Bentley's legendary dealer.
Condition and Features
- Interior: Beautifully preserved and original, with beige leather seats showing an elegant and inviting patina, adding to the car’s charm.
- Woodwork: The wooden dashboard, refurbished approximately 10 years ago, perfectly embodies Bentley’s signature blend of luxury and sporting character.
- Exterior: The paintwork, redone some years ago in an attractive color, would benefit from a light refresh to bring it back to peak condition.
- Equipment: The car retains its original toolkit neatly stored in its dedicated boot compartment.
A Rare Opportunity
With only 147 left-hand drive Continental S2s ever produced, and this being an early and historically significant example, it represents a unique opportunity for collectors seeking authenticity, rarity, and elegance.
Its charming originality, long-term ownership, and exclusive Continental specification make this Bentley an ideal candidate for preservation, light restoration, or continued enjoyment on long-distance tours.
